I’ve been reading Creative Quest by Questlove and one of the exercises he suggests doing is writing down the kind of artist you don’t want to be, so you can figure out what you do want to be. I thought it sounded interesting so here’s what I don’t want to be:
I don’t want to be the kind of artist who isn’t flexible and doesn’t take feedback.
I don’t want to be someone who focuses on negative feedback either.
I don’t want to be someone who compromises the heart of a story. I can make changes but if the heart changes maybe it isn’t my story anymore.
I don’t want to be an artist who gives up on trying to make it.
I don’t want to be an artist who doesn’t prioritize the work.
I don’t want to be an artist who stagnates and writes the same story all the time.
I don’t want to be an artist who isn’t constantly improving.
I don’t want to be an artist who burns out. I want to make time for all things not just art.
I don’t want to be an artist without a finished body of work, whether or not that work is ever published and becomes mainstream or not.
What about you? What kind of artist don’t you want to be?
